My Story

I started my wood turning adventure in 1999. But even after 25 years, there is enjoyment in every piece I turn. There is something magical about turning a burl or piece of wood into an exceptional decorative piece – that brings a smile.

Most of the pieces I turn are decorative in nature – focusing on the natural edges, the ruggedness of the wood, the color, the unusual deformities and the silkiness to the touch of the finished piece. Many of the pieces will incorporate epoxy resin into the design – just another feature that enhances the beauty of the piece.

The process of finding the wood and burls has its rewards as well. It’s enjoyable to hike through the woods accompanied by my wife and dog, Oskar, looking for burls and unusual pieces of wood. But rarely do we cut a tree. We look for burls on branches and dead trees and stumps. A walk always includes the basic necessities – a folding buck saw and a packsack to carry the burls home. The majority of wood that I use is locally harvested.

I have been asked many times by friends and people if I spend much time on social media and I reply, “I spend lots of time on my lathe!”
